Brand-new Colruyt Brakel is 900 m² larger

9 December 2019

On Wednesday 11 December, the brand-new Colruyt store in Brakel opens its doors. The supermarket was expanded by half its former size. Customers can now find an even broader range of products in their store. Moreover, thanks to the expansion, 8 new co-workers will help the customers to the best of their abilities. This low-energy store also houses a new butcher's department with self-service and a bigger Collect&Go pick-up point. The large car park has accommodation for electric cars and two-wheelers. Classic cars can refuel at the new DATS 24 station at the front of the site; it opens on the same day as the store.

Complete assortment on 1.900 m²

The former Colruyt store in Brakel had become too old and too small to shop comfortably. "That is why we completely tore it down and built a new, larger store in the same place", says store manager Eefje Colman. "It is almost 1,900 m² large. A larger store means a broader range of products: the frozen products department and the fresh-market are much larger now.  And 2 additional check-out points - in total we have 9 now - ensure a smooth service."

Butcher's department with open workshop

Customers can choose their fresh quality meat in the self-service butcher's department. Head butcher Jens Van Opdenbosch: "Customers can see the butchers at work in an open workshop and talk to them if they have questions or a special order. They also have a better overview of the assortment of meat, cold cuts and salads and the wide choice of prepared dishes."

Collect&Go shops for the customers

The Collect&Go pick-up point is also larger than the one in the old store, which means they can handle more reservations. "Collect&Go is a handy Colruyt Group service where we shop for the customers", store manager Eefje Colman says. "They send their shopping list to collectandgo.be or via the app, and the Collect&Go employees have their products ready at the pick-up point by the day and time of their choice."

Employment and maximum service

Colruyt offers its customers the best service it can. To realise this, the larger store now works with 41 co-workers instead of 33.

Sustainable store

Colruyt made a few sustainable choices for this new store. The prices are mentioned on electronic labels. They are environment-friendlier than paper labels. Furthermore, Colruyt Brakel is a low-energy store with solar panels and optimal insulation, ventilation, cooling and heating. Eefje Colman: "This project is part of a more comprehensive renovation plan: by 2029, all Colruyt Group stores should be low-energy stores. The group's CO2 emissions have to go down by 4 %."

Large car park for cars and bikes

The new, larger car park has 133 places. There is a charging point for electric cars. From now on, motorists can get quality fuel at the brand-new DATS 24 station 24/7. Bikes also received some special attention. "More and more people come to the store by bicycle, delivery bicycle or tricycle, or scooter", says the store manager. "For this reason, we use staple racks, a kind of U-shaped metal profile that is ideal to attach several kinds of two-wheelers. The bicycle shed in Brakel has room for 26 bicycles or 13 delivery bicycles."

Special opening reception on 10 December

From Wednesday 11 December, store manager Eefje Colman, head butcher Jens Van Opdenbosch and their co-workers will be on hand to serve their customers again at Colruyt Brakel. "The evening before everyone can come and discover the new store", says the store manager. "During this special open evening in the presence of mayor Stefaan Devleeschouwer, we will offer our customers snacks and drinks from 5 to 8 pm. Everyone is most welcome!"
