Wanted: Food for the Future

10 April 2020

So what’s on the menu in 2050? Even the most leading edge restaurants aren’t asking that yet. But we are. Because by 2050, the world population will need about 50% more food than it does today. By then, there’ll be over 9 billion people on the planet.

That is why from 2016 to 2018 we joined forces with the province of Flemish Brabant, Vredeseilanden (Rikolto), KU Leuven and UCLL for an ambitious project: "Wanted: Food for the Future". The project won the Sustainable Parnerships Award, which gives a podium to the best examples of international cooperation between the public sector, companies and non-profit organisations.

Together with young people, experts, farmers, etc., we were actively looking for sustainable ways to feed the world population. Food for the Future wanted to start the debate about food. By getting scientists, business people, governments, citizen-consumers and social organisations around the table.

And it didn't stop at debating. Together, we set up a sustainable food chain in the South: quinoa from Peru. The products are delicious and nutritious, they have a low environmental impact and, at the same time, offer new opportunities to the farmers who grow them. So what will definitely be on your plate in 2050? Quinoa!
