How can you enjoy your avocado up to twice as long?
Oh, avocados! One moment they are not quite ready to eat, and the next ... too late! Such a shame. That is why Colruyt Group is the first retailer in Belgium to start using the innovative Apeel technology. An additional plant-based protective layer keeps moisture in the fruit and oxygen out. This is how our avocados stay fresh up to two times longer. And how we fight against food waste together. The avocados will be sold at Colruyt as of February 2021.
Freshness inspired by nature
The protective layer applied to the avocados is 100% plant-based: made from substances found in the skin, seeds and fruit pulp of fruit and vegetables. So we use the assets of other fruits and vegetables to extend the shelf life of avocados.
The extra ‘peel’ slows water loss and oxidation of the avocados. As a result they maintain their quality for longer. After all, oxygen ensures that an avocado ripens, but can lead it to spoil more quickly and moisture loss causes dehydration.Michael Schaeman from Apeel Sciences.
Less food waste
The extra protective layer on the avocado has no colour, smell or taste. You won’t notice it, but it is there! Although ... after a few days you can definitely see a difference.
A ready-to-eat avocado normally lasts about 10 days when stored at room temperature at home. Thanks to the 'extra peel', this is no less than seventeen days, according to the figures from Apeel and the tests by Colruyt Group.
“By extending the shelf life of avocados, fewer will be thrown away,” says Jan Schockaert, head of the Fruit Purchasing Department at Colruyt Group. "In this way we reduce food waste in the store and in our customers' homes.”
We can also save a lot of raw materials and resources – such as water, energy, transport, refrigeration and packaging – that are needed to get the fruit to the stores and consumers. Together we contribute to a better environment, step by step.
Colruyt Group is the first retailer in Belgium and Luxembourg to use this technique to extend the shelf life of a product. “This project is in line with our vision to offer a sustainable and quality product range to our customers,” says Jan Schockaert. “Our R&D&I department is actively looking for technologies and innovations that have a positive impact on the shelf life and quality of our products.” We are looking into applying this technology to other types of fruit and vegetables as well.
Colruyt Group's vision on sustainability – and, hence, on avoiding food waste – closely matches the philosophy of Apeel Sciences. We are therefore pleased that our supplier uses their storage technology and that we can offer these products.
