A year full of sustainable initiatives, from you and from us
Gosh, 2020! A turbulent year, that is for sure. But also a year in which we saw and experienced beautiful things. How essential it is to take care of each other and the planet. That small initiatives – such as keeping a distance – can make a big difference. That governments, companies and individuals work together to overcome global challenges. And above all: that there is hope. Together we remain committed to a more sustainable world. We, and you. Let's look back with a focus on those positive things and look forward to a better future.
Together against corona
To make shopping as safe as possible, we all make efforts. Wearing face masks, keeping a safe distance, acrylic screens, shopping alone, disinfecting-disinfecting-disinfecting ... In the beginning it took some getting used to, now this is our new normal. Thank you for helping us to make our stores and filling stations safe places to be.
With respect for animals
Together with our livestock farmers and suppliers, we take initiatives to continuously improve the welfare of the animals in our production chains. Our pigs, rabbits, cows and chickens are given animal-friendly stables and space for natural behaviour. All our eggs come from free-range hens or hens that are allowed to roam free. Our conventional pigs are never castrated. Slaughterhouses are regularly inspected and transport is kept to a minimum. In this way, we are together going for healthy and stress-free animals, step by step.
Our Belgian farmers can count on us
We can always count on our Belgian farmers, and they on us. We and you buy a maximum of Belgian products, at the right price: burgers and spreads with soy from Kruishoutem, milk and cream from 330 Belgian dairy farmers, Belgian organic pork, potatoes from 17 local growers, organic vegetables from Roeselare and our own Belgian apple varieties; Magic Star and Coryphée. This is how, together, we guarantee the local food supply and the autonomy and economy of our country.
Together for less CO₂ emissions
We are all taking action to fight climate change. At Colruyt Group, we wanted to emit at least 20 % less CO₂ compared to 2008 (in relation to our turnover). We have more than succeeded in this. An amazing result, because we were already making great efforts in terms of sustainability back then. And together we'll make it 40 % by 2030 !
By travelling fewer kilometres, for example, and opting for greener fuels. Each year we renovate an average of 20 stores to turn them into low-energy stores. Fresh products stay cool thanks to our sustainable liquid ice containers and refrigeration installations that use natural coolants, such as propane. We continue to reduce our energy consumption and focus on the production of renewable energy. We can do so thanks to your support. Because you shop at our stores, we can invest in sustainable initiatives. Together we reduce our CO₂ emissions and help the climate.
Training for a better future
As Colruyt Group’s company fund, Collibri Foundation has supported training projects for young people in difficult situations for more than 15 years. Both in Belgium and in developing countries where we buy products. Also in corona times, of course. We do this with your help. By buying our Boni chocolate and rounding up your bill, you donated 70,250 euros this year. We are doubling this amount to 140,500 euros. Together we create opportunities for more than 6,700 young people in 10 countries.
No crumbs are wasted
Throwing away food is a shame. A shame of all the energy, water, emissions, packaging ... You are creative with leftovers. Just like we are. Leftover vegetables end up in the enVie soups. Our Magic Star apples that are not suitable for sale, go into apple juice, apple cake and sorbet. And stale bread becomes animal feed. Food that is still perfectly edible is largely donated to social organisations such as the Food banks. They then distribute the food to people who are less fortunate. Together we make sure all the food ends up at the right places.
Healthier food, let’s do it together
A healthy and balanced diet is important for all of us. We are glad to help. Our private label products are continuously improved. We take a close look at their composition and see where we can leave out or cut back on salt, fats or sugars. Or where we can add something good, like fibre. The Nutri-Score on the packaging will tell you at a glance how a product scores. It makes it so much easier to make conscious choices.
More opportunities for developing regions
Do you buy our chocolate from Nicaragua, our coffee from Burundi, Colombia or Congo, our rice from India or our quinoa from Peru? If so, together we support more than 30,000 farmers in developing regions. We promise them to buy a fixed volume at a good price and guidance in relation to logistics, processing and sales. You get a quality product, sustainably produced with respect for people and the environment. Through Collibri Foundation, we are reinvesting part of our turnover in training programmes for young people in the same regions. Together we contribute to the well-being and prosperity of developing countries.
We are doing our bit, just like you. Because together we can really make a difference, step by step.
Fewer raw materials, better for the environment
The most sustainable raw materials are those you don’t consume. Together we take many initiatives to save on plastic, paper, water and so much more. You choose to use reusable bags, for example. Or you buy the fresh herbs from our vertical farming installation, which consumes less water and nutrients. All those small efforts make a huge difference. In this way we do not deplete the earth and together we contribute to a better environment, step by step.
Together as one, stronger together
Together we take care of each other and especially of the heroes in the corona frontline. We sewed no less than 125,000 face masks for our caregivers. Taking groceries to their workplace... or to their homes with Solucious, Xtra, Cru, Collect&Go Connect or Collect&Go delivery by neighbourhood volunteers. Quite a relief after a hard day’s work! And our store employees receive help from 3,000 temporarily unemployed people, working students and extra workers. This is how we encourage each other and together move towards a warmer society, step by step.
