MSC: a label for wild fish

The fish that you find in our range are not only delicious, they’re also from responsible fisheries. To guarantee this, we work with the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified fisheries, a council created in 1997, which certifies well-managed fisheries. Its certification includes the flawless traceability of the products, all the way from the boat to your plate.

Continuity, preservation and effectiveness

The MSC’s activities comprise three areas: the continuity of target stocks, the preservation of ecosystems and the effectiveness of the fishery’s management system. The council therefore aims to promote those fisheries which fish a balanced stock under strict management, use techniques with a low impact on the ecosystem and work in compliance with the regulations which require the traceability of the catch.

A maximum of certified products

By starting a collaboration with the MSC, we are making it clear that we are willing to go further than the regulations require. So you can be sure that you’re not consuming fish which have been caught in sensitive areas or by using non-selective equipment. At the end of 2015, we decided to get a maximum number of our fish products sustainably certified. Philippe Toussaint, manager sustainable sourcing at Colruyt Group, explains, “This represents about 70% of our range.” For its part, the ILVO continues to monitor fish which aren’t available under the MSC. This is how we can guarantee the sustainability of all our wild fish.
