New: basmati rice that tells a story

You can now buy sustainable basmati rice from our house brand Boni Selection Bio at Colruyt, Bio-Planet, OKay and Spar. All thanks to a chain project in India. Small, family farming organisations are working with experts to build an efficient and sustainable production chain that reaches from the rice paddies to the shop. We buy 130 tonnes of their harvest every year, creating a win-win situation: the rice farmers have a permanent sales market and we offer our customers sustainable, high-quality basmati rice.

130 tonnes of rice a year

Every year, we buy almost 130 tonnes of organic rice from the Fair Farming Foundation cooperative in India. We turn this into two Boni Selection Bio products: basmati rice and a rice mix.

From 28 March, you can buy the rice in all our Colruyt, OKay, Bio-Planet and Spar Colruyt Group shops.

Five questions about the chain project

What? The 'Fair and Good' chain project started in 2011 when four international organisations joined forces. They are working with the local farming organisations to build a new supply chain with clear sustainability goals.

Who? The Fair Farming Foundation cooperative brings together 4,500 small family farming businesses, with 2,212 of them cultivating basmati rice.

Where? In the Uttarakhand region, at the foot of the Himalayas.

Why? Indian rice farmers face significant challenges, including poverty, climate change and rural depopulation. Training delivered by experts, certification of the rice and a permanent sales market can help them.

The results? Very promising, from a reduction of 30% in greenhouse gas emissions to organic certification and more income for the rice farmers.
