New walking routes for healthier working conditions at Colruyt Group

30 January 2020

Walking in nature is good for the body and mind. It's an incredibly simple but effective way to boost your health and mood. Because we want to give our employees the opportunity to exercise more and feel good, together with the City of Halle and Sport Flanders, we have marked out four walking routes in the green surroundings of our Wilgenveld site, over a total distance of 16 km. Our new cycle path is also located on one of the routes. This convenient link through the countryside is a safe and pleasant alternative for cyclists and pedestrians, rather than taking busy roads.

Four routes for nature lovers

We have worked intensively with the City of Halle and Sport Flanders to select walking routes that take in the biodiversity of the landscape. They can be used by Colruyt Group employees as well as local residents. Along these routes, nature lovers can enjoy a colourful collection of flora and fauna. Walkers can spend time getting to know the biodiverse landscape, the pleasure gardens, the wildlife area for vulnerable biotopes, the pick-your-own farm, the water reservoir and the Eoly wind park. Information boards have also been placed.

For the well-being of employees

For us, the personal well-being of our employees is of the utmost importance. That's why we want to give employees the chance to take more movement breaks and to relax when working. Indeed, this has a positive influence on physical and mental health. For example, we are organising a start-to-run and a start-to-walk on the new walking trails. We have quiet rooms and sit/stand desks in the office buildings, we provide sessions for yoga and mindfulness, and we also run balanced diet and stopping smoking sessions. And lots more.

New cycle path parallel to Beertsestraat

Cyclists and pedestrians can now use the recently-opened cycle path that runs from Pachtersweg, along the Elbeek site and to the Wilgenveld site. There was already an access road in place from when we built our windmills, so it made logical sense to upgrade this to a cycle path. As well as being a convenient link, the cycle path is also a safe alternative to Beertsestraat. This can get busy during rush hour, Thanks to the new cycle path, we have improved traffic safety and made headway with an alternative cycle path towards Pajottenland.

With this initiative, we contribute to the following Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
