Using raw materials sparingly
As a retailer, we use raw materials every day for our products, packaging, stores and logistics. Population growth and rising consumption have led to a shortage of raw materials. Which is why we want to manage them responsibly. Through our circular approach, we reduce waste, use materials more efficiently and ensure that raw materials are put to good use for as long as possible.
How does the circular economy work for Colruyt Group?
- Refuse and rethink: avoiding the use of raw materials and redesigning products so that fewer raw materials are needed.
- Reduce: using only what is necessary and reducing the quantity of raw materials.
- Recircle: making the most of products by putting them back into circulation, e.g. through repair, refurbishment or the second-hand market.
- Recycle: recycling and reusing materials.
- Recover: recovering energy from materials.
Why do we apply the principles of the circular economy?
To fulfil our role as a retailer, we use raw materials and resources throughout the entire supply chain. As these resources are under pressure globally, we aim to manage them as efficiently and responsibly as possible. By applying the principles of the circular economy, we minimise waste and reduce our impact on people and the environment. We translate this approach into specific sub-objectives, with a clear focus on food (loss) and packaging.
