History
Colruyt Group evolved from wholesaler (1928) to discount retail (1964), with efficiency and readiness to serve at its core. In 2007, Colruyt Group emerged as a group of different retail formats, with attention to sustainability, innovation and later also health.
Milestones in the history of Colruyt Group
2024

2021
The Eco-score (now Green-score) makes the environmental impact of products visible at a glance and supports customers in making more conscious choices. In the same year, Colruyt Group broadens its offering in preventive health with the acquisition of online pharmacy Newpharma and fitness chain Jims.

Colruyt Group expands its B2B activities under the name Solucious, a foodservice company for professional customers such as hospitality businesses, healthcare institutions, schools and companies.
2011
Colruyt Group Academy is launched as a training and inspiration platform for employees and customers. Workshops on professional expertise, food, the environment and wellbeing make lifelong learning concrete and accessible.
2007
The growth and diversification of activities create the need for a group level. With the launch of Colruyt Group in 2007, a group of different formats is formed, strengthening one another.
2005
The establishment of Collibri Foundation (now Colruyt Group Foundation) anchors the group’s social commitment. The foundation focuses on educational projects in response to social challenges associated with international sourcing.
2003
As license holder of the Spar retail format in Belgium, Colruyt once again works closely with independent retailers. Through Spar Retail (now Retail Partners Colruyt Group), the group supports them with purchasing, logistics and marketing.
1999
Colruyt builds the first private wind turbine in Belgium in Halle, supplying its logistics activities with renewable energy: an important milestone in the further development of its sustainability policy.
1994
Jef Colruyt succeeds his father as CEO. He shifts the focus towards growth through diversification with new formats such as Okay and Bio-Planet, and expansion into non-food with Dreamland and Dreambaby. In 1996, Colruyt crosses the border into France for the first time.
1990
With the Green Line charter, Colruyt explicitly commits to the environment, based on the conviction that ecology and economy go hand in hand. This commitment leads to greener transport, bottle reuse and packaging with lower environmental impact. Through green price labels, customers can easily see which products have been made more environmentally friendly.
1987
Colruyt introduces the barcode as the first distribution company in Belgium, automating checkout, replenishment, stock management and ordering. This technological breakthrough marks a turning point after a challenging period.
1985
A period of high costs and fierce competition puts profitability under pressure. The supermarket responds with Red Prices: lower prices than competitors for comparable products. These price differences are communicated to customers through leaflets.
1964
When supplying smaller stores becomes too expensive, the focus shifts from wholesale to retail. Jo Colruyt opens the first proprietary supermarket, offering well-known brands 10% cheaper through maximum simplicity and minimal store fittings. Thus, the discount model is born, laying the foundation for the later lowest-price strategy.
1958
Jo Colruyt succeeds his father and introduces the American supermarket model with self-service among independent retailers. In 1958, the first Super Boni opens: a small self-service store with a large food assortment.
1953
With Boni stamps, Franz Colruyt introduces a successful loyalty programme. The name ‘Boni’ refers to the voucher customers receive when they have collected enough stamps. The most loyal customers of the Colruyt wholesale business receive a Boni advertising sign as a gift. The first Boni stores become a reality.
1948
Work simplification makes its entry into the organisation. During and shortly after the war years, Franz learns that survival is only possible by limiting costs and simplifying processes. He sends his son Jo to a course on work simplification, laying the foundation for a more efficient way of working.
1928
Founder Franz Colruyt, son of baker Joseph Colruyt, starts delivering bread to shops and large consumers in the Brussels region. Soon he expands this to other grocery products. This lays the foundations of a wholesale business and of what would later become Colruyt Group.
