Colruyt Group creates local added value in Belgian society

As a 100 % Belgian family business, we have firmly chosen to make a positive contribution to Belgian society, ever since our founding in 1928. We operate close to the Belgian consumer, provide sustainable employment and invest in Belgian agriculture, production and innovation.

Our local impact at a glance

Together, all our retail formats reach one third of the Belgian population, accounting for more than 4 million customers.

As the largest private employer in Belgium, we invest in the personal growth and expertise of more than 30,000 employees.

Through an extensive network of partnerships with Belgian agricultural businesses, entrepreneurs and non-profit organisations, we invest in Belgian society as a whole.

We produce 30% of our private label products ourselves, keeping the associated expertise entirely in Belgium.

How do we operate locally?

As a retailer: close to our customers

Physical and digital presence
With our hundreds of physical stores, we are literally close to more than 4 million customers. In Wallonia and in cities, we will expand this presence even further in the coming years. Our online webshops and the expansion of home delivery through Collect&Go also guarantee our proximity.

Accessible offering
Thanks to our close connection with Belgian society, we are able to offer an accessible range in terms of budget, quality, convenience and sustainability. Our growing health offering also makes it as easy as possible for customers to take steps towards their physical and mental wellbeing.

As an employer: by and for the community

Sustainable employment
More than 30,000 employees represent the company with pride in every corner of the country. Within our people-oriented organisation and no-nonsense corporate culture, they are given the opportunity to give meaning to their work, develop new skills and grow as individuals. Because the company grows as its employees grow.

Giving back to society
The added value we create as an organisation flows back into society. By creating sustainable jobs, passing on knowledge and expertise to future generations and investing in innovation, we contribute to Belgium’s socio-economic development.

As an investor: together with our partners

Locally made, locally loved
Under this slogan, we highlight our top-quality Belgian-made products. For our supply, we collaborate with 6,000 Belgian farmers. With around 600 of them, we enter into long-term partnerships focusing on, among other things, sustainability, new crops and soil health.

Supporting local entrepreneurship
We invest in Belgian businesses whose unique offering can contribute to our strategic objectives, provided they share the same values in terms of local sourcing, sustainability and customer focus. In this way, these companies have the opportunity to grow while retaining their local character.

As a producer: thanks to our expertise

Investing in Belgian production
We produce 30% of our private label food assortment in Halle, at Colruyt Group Fine Food, one of the largest food production departments in Belgium. By processing products such as meat, cheese and bread ourselves, we keep expertise and employment in Belgium.

Local production from A to Z
In some cases, we go one step further and manage the entire chain, from raw material to end product. This is currently the case for Belgian mussels and wine. By investing in local craftmanship with passion, we ensure consistent quality, control the ecological impact and build in-depth product knowledge.

Distributing food surpluses locally

What do we do with food products that we are unable to sell in time? We donate part of them. Our stores deliver their food surpluses largely directly – and therefore quickly and safely – to more than 400 local social organisations, which in turn distribute them to those who need them most. We work with umbrella organisations such as Food Banks, Foodsavers and La Croix Rouge to ensure that this process runs smoothly. In 2025, we donated more than 10,000 tonnes of food in this way. This makes us the strongest and most structural Belgian partner for these organisations.

Frequently asked questions

  • By collecting points in the Xtra app. You do this by purchasing products with a Green-score A or A+. From 100 saved points onwards, you can support Belgian charities of Colruyt Group Foundation in the Xtra app. In this way, you take not one but two steps forward: you buy products with a lower environmental impact and contribute to Belgian society.

In addition, Colruyt Group and all its retail formats organise annual fundraising campaigns for Food Banks. As a customer, you can donate money at the checkout to provide nutritious meals for families in need. The proceeds are distributed among local food aid organisations. In 2025, the campaign resulted in the equivalent of 153,000 meals.

  • You can do so via our job site. Use the convenient filters to find the right job among the hundreds of vacancies.

  • We strengthen the local economy through a targeted local purchasing strategy and vertical integration. Concretely, we make the following three choices:

    1. Maximum Belgian sourcing: we resolutely give priority to short supply chains. Today, we offer products from more than 6,000 Belgian farmers in our stores. Only when local availability is insufficient to meet customer demand do we look for solutions abroad.
    2. Local production and expertise: in our own production departments (Colruyt Group Fine Food), we process and package (largely) Belgian raw materials into finished products. We now produce 30% of all our private label food products internally, ensuring that expertise remains in Belgium.
    3. Innovation throughout the entire chain: we invest in unique projects where we manage the entire chain. Examples include our own sea farm in Nieuwpoort for the cultivation of Belgian rope-grown mussels and our own vineyards, from which we will sell the first bottles of Belgian wine in spring 2026.
  • Via the registration form, you can apply at any time as a supplier for one or more of our retail formats. Be sure to consult the full procedure and conditions on our supplier page.

At Colruyt Group, we are determined to offer as many Belgian products as possible in our retail formats
