Belgian agriculture hand in hand with Belgian retail
As the proud (and only) truly Belgian retailer, we’re fully committed to offering as many Belgian products as possible. How? By working closely with Belgian farmers, by innovating with local production, and by producing a share of our food products ourselves. Discover what we’re doing here.
How we ensure as many Belgian products as possible in our stores
Gunther Uyttenhove, Director of Farming and Fine Food, explains our strategic choice to offer as many Belgian products as possible in our stores.
In collaboration with around 15 Belgian poultry farmers, we present “locally raised chicken,” with stricter welfare standards than those for standard broiler chickens.
These two varieties, grown exclusively for Colruyt Group, ensure delicious Belgian apples in our stores all year round. The growers are guaranteed a market and a fair price.
We work with 185 cattle farmers via three officially recognised Belgian organisations, with clear agreements on purchasing, price, quality, and animal welfare.
Through a direct partnership, we select the best varieties and extend the Belgian potato season by a full month.
We’re the only retailer in Belgium offering rope-grown mussels from our very own sea farm. An innovative step in sustainable protein sourcing.
Healthier soils and less climate impact: two major benefits of carbon farming. We’re currently testing various techniques together with farmers in the field.
A stable market for Belgian farmers, less transport from abroad — that’s why we choose Belgian fresh produce wherever possible.
Together with 300 dairy farmers affiliated with Inex, we’re working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from milk production.
Circular, plant-based, and local: Bio-Planet hits the sustainability sweet spot with veggie products made from brewers’ spent grain and yellow split peas, in collaboration with Belgian partners.
30% of our private-label food products come from in-house production. With our Fine Food production department, we keep traditional know-how and jobs here in Belgium.
