Protecting our ecosystems through deforestation-free products
The disappearance of valuable ecosystems is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss. Furthermore, deforestation and the conversion of natural land to agricultural land or other forms of production exacerbate climate change and put pressure on the availability of raw materials. That’s why, by 2030, we aim to exclude products from high-risk supply chains that contribute to deforestation and land-use conversion.
Why is Colruyt Group focusing on deforestation and ecosystems?
Healthy ecosystems are essential to our food supply. Among other things, they ensure pollination of crops by insects, fertile soils and sufficient water, genetic diversity (variation within a species; for example, not all wheat plants are the same)
We want to guarantee our customers that our products do not originate from recently deforested or converted natural land (after 2020). This is important for the environment, but also for a stable and reliable long-term supply.
In the initial phase, we are focusing on products covered by the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), such as palm oil, cocoa, coffee, soy, timber, paper, rubber and cattle.

How do we ensure our products are deforestation-free?
We comply with the provisions of the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Where Colruyt Group acts as an importer, we draw up reliable due diligence statements to demonstrate the origin of raw materials.
For our high-risk own-brand products, we use certification from independent third parties.
We follow a strict policy to detect, assess and mitigate risks of negative impacts in our supply chains. This process helps us to take proactive action where ecosystems are under pressure.
The challenges in high-risk supply chains are significant. By working closely with partners and experts, we gain better insights into the entire value chain. And with that information, we can reduce deforestation or better verify the origin of our products.
We make our progress measurable. We map our suppliers and analyse relevant indicators to communicate openly about our results and the measures taken.
