National clean-up operation: the Retail Clean Up Days

“Great, just bought a packet of crisps. Know what? I’ll eat them now. Ah, the bin’s 10m away. I’ll just drop it here then.” If supermarket parking areas could read minds, they wouldn't find this at all strange. Packaging, plastic bags, glass. You’ll find them all there. And the streets around the shop would also feel the same. Time for action! During the annual Retail Clean Up Days, we clean up the areas around some 400 shops thoroughly.

Clean shop, clean streets

Peter Haentjens, manager of Colruyt Aalst, also rolled up his sleeves during the first national Retail Clean Up Days in 2016. Together with his team, with customers and associations, he staged a major clean-up operation around his shop. Peter explains, “Our parking area is generally clean thanks to the cleaning and shop teams. But we also wanted to tackle the streets around the shop. Joke Schauvliege, Flemish Minister for Environment, Nature and Agriculture, came to lend a hand in Aalst. “I’m pleased that retailers themselves are rolling up their sleeves to clean up the area around their shops. If everyone keeps their own pavement clean, Flanders will soon look a lot prettier!”

We want to inspire customers to work with us to reduce street litter.

Joining hands against street litter

The Retail Clean Up Days are an initiative from the trade federation Comeos, in collaboration with the Mooimakers cleanliness network in Flanders and BeWaPP in Wallonia. Colruyt Group came up with the idea, Comeos developed it further. A total of 1,460 shops in Belgium took part. We were well-represented with 380 Colruyt, Bio-Planet and OKay shops, and some of the 220 independent Spar shops. Peter continues, “We wanted to inspire customers to reduce litter via this activity.”

All of our OKay shops took part in the clean-up operation.

The clean-up operation also fits in with our ‘Joining hands against street litter’ five-year plan which we launched in 2015. By 2020, we want to create a real change of behaviour amongst our customers and employees.
