Reusable polyester bags are reducing our footprint
Colruyt Group is the first Belgian retailer to introduce reusable bags for loose fruit and vegetables as the only alternative to single use bags. The reusable bags are made of polyester, are extremely strong and can be put in the washing machine. The decision to use polyester wasn’t taken lightly: we considered the total environmental impact of various materials over their entire life cycle. The LCA assessment (life-cycle analysis) showed that polyester scores considerably better than other materials.
Life Cycle Analysis
An LCA study identifies the full environmental impact: from the raw materials, production and transport, to the very end, when the bag can no longer be used. We compared 10 different bags and reached the scientific conclusion that a polyester bag has the lowest total environmental impact. We looked at different criteria such as global warming, land use, water consumption and pollution, energy consumption, use of raw materials, etc.
A well-considered choice
A polyester bag is very strong and can therefore be reused for a very long time. You can easily use it more than a hundred times without it showing any wear and tear. The more you use the bag, the more sustainable it becomes. Just by reusing it 9 times, our polyester bag has a lower environmental impact than a one-time paper bag. Polyester also scores better than cotton, due in part to the large amount of water and pesticides used to grow cotton.
