More sustainable macadamia nuts from Malawi
A unique transition has been underway in Malawi for several years: old tobacco plantations are gradually giving way to macadamia plantations. Colruyt Group invests in this chain project, the result of which can be found under the Boni Selection house brand.
From tobacco to more sustainable nuts
Former tobacco land is being transformed step by step into macadamia plantations. A special variety of macadamia is planted that bears fruit after only three years. By 2026, around 6,000 hectares of land will have a new purpose. Together with producer Gala Macs, processor Eurocompany, investor Signature and local partners, we also support a pilot group of 40 local farmers, enabling them to transition to a more stable crop.
Colruyt Group commits as a fixed buyer, thereby strengthening the entire chain. Colruyt Lowest Prices and Okay will offer around 15 tonnes of these macadamia nuts annually under the Boni Selection private label.
Growth thanks to local craftsmanship
Gala Macs established its own tree nursery in Malawi to grow macadamia trees perfectly adapted to the local soil and climate. The nursery simultaneously trains employees and builds agricultural knowledge. The nursery also serves as a broader lever for further development. It is used for:
- Raising native tree species.
- Reforestation programs in Malawi.
- Expanding agricultural knowledge for future projects with local farmers.
The next step is investment in a local processing site. From 2026, the nuts will no longer be cracked in South Africa, but in Malawi itself, creating additional employment.
Inclusive innovation: more than just nuts
Sustainable chain development does not stop at agriculture. In 2023, Gala Macs launched the Bee & Honey Project, a double-impact initiative:
- Hives support pollination of macadamia trees.
- Honey production creates additional income for women in local communities.
Eventually, 8,000 beehives are planned. This will give rise to a completely new economic activity that helps families move forward while contributing to healthy ecosystems.
Macadamia nuts: healthy choice
Macadamia nuts are not only flavourful; they also contain:
- healthy monounsaturated fats.
- Dietary fiber and antioxidants.
- Vitamin E, manganese, copper and thiamine.
They therefore fit well into a varied and balanced diet.
Eye for the long term
This chain project shows how long-term collaboration across the chain, from cultivation to processing and sales, creates value for all. It combines economic opportunity with ecological progress and social inclusion.
Together, we are making sustainable food more accessible to our customers step by step, while helping to build strong, resilient farming communities in Malawi.
