Waste? Rather not!
Water, food and fertilizers? Check. Packaging? Yes. Energy for processing, cooling and transport, ditto! Indeed, putting even the simplest food on our plates requires many efforts and that is a real shame if we throw away the food afterwards. Anyway, we have come up with a few smart ways to avoid food loss and you can chip in at home too.
Throwing away less is easy
Obviously, you don't consume all the fresh products you buy on the same day. If you know enough about shelf life, you’ll be slower to throw away something from your fridge.Read more
We sell 97.38% of our fresh and frozen food
How do we do that? By keeping an eye on what our customers want. We check to see which products aren’t selling well in our Colruyt, OKay and Bio-Planet shops every 3 months. We reduce the volumes of these products on the shelves, or replace them with products which sell better in a particular shop or region. So eventually, each shop will get a tailor-made range for its customers, which produces less waste.
An automated ordering system ensures optimum stocks in the shops. Not too little, because we want to be able to serve everyone, but not too much either. Otherwise, we’ll get stuck with products which are approaching their expiry date and are unsold.
Looking after those with less
We look for a useful destination for the 2.62% of foods we don't sell. We make as much of it as possible available to those who need it, and incinerate as little as possible.Read more
From food waste to food gain
In the circular economy, waste equals base material. We are researching ways to create new foods based on food remains. Off to a second life for unsold bananas, potatoes and bread!Read more
